MEXICO-Cholula
Friday 1st we left the van to visit
the only pyramid with a Christian Church
on top, built by Cortes. Cortes stated
that he would build a church on every pyramid. We saw a gas depot
and went in to see if they could check our van for a gas leak.
They came back with us and said they would return tomorrow. We
then walked to the pyramid and passed through the tunnel dug by the
excavators. It was very interesting. We then looked at the
remainder of the excavations. Howard took a taxi back to the
camp, Mervyn continued his tour of the town.
Saturday 2nd Howard had a rest morning while Mervyn visited Puebla, we shopped in the afternoon. Sunday we set off to go to Cacaxtla, we got lost, there were no signs, we retraced our route asking numerous Mexicans only to find the site clo
sed when we eventually
found it. We carried on to Teotihuacan where we parked in the
town square, surrounded by a fence of cactus. Monday we took a taxi to
the ruins. We enjoyed the visit very much, lots of buildings
including two pyramids. We had lunch in the restaurant and then
took a taxi back, it cost twice as much on the way back. Tuesday we returned to the
site to visit the Palace of Tepantitla to see the murals. We then
left for Tepotzotlan, when we reached the main road out of Mexico City,
there were no signs for the Pereferico round to the north of the
city. We drove in towards the city, turned back and drove out
into the country. We eventually drove cross country to find
Tepotzotlan. A 30min journey turned into 3hrs. Wednesday at 1500 the
English speaking Señora arrived, she phoned a garage and the propane
man. The garage man booked us in for 1000 the next day, the
propane man couldn’t find a leak and put 30 litres of gas into the
tank. Thursday
the garage found a worn track rod end
which required new parts from England. We made a visit to the
internet café to order the parts. Friday we made a second
visit to the internet café, then Mervyn suggested Howard could
go skiing while we waited for the parts.
Saturday 9th Howard booked a flight and the first night in Salt Lake City, We were given a lift to go shopping at Wal-mart by a Cana
dian with a ca
mper (5th wheel). We
went out to dinner, the recommended restaurant was closed, the
substitute was poor. Sunday
Howard left for skiing.
Sunday 17th Howard returned at 1600 having had an enjoyable week. Monday Mervyn went off to Mexico City while Howard unpacked and relaxed. Tuesday we were still awaiting parts, no luck. Manfred and Lotti arrived to see us (we met them in San Cristobel de las Casas). Wednesday still awaiting parts, we tried to contact DHL getting a recorded message in Spanish. We looked on the net to try to track the parts. They were delayed at the customs. Thursday we returned to the net to print off the parts route, then we took a taxi to the DHL depot, where we found an English speaking agent. He phoned customs who wanted confirmation that we would pay the import duty. We immediately agreed to pay the duty. Friday another visit to the internet café where we accessed the net, there was no progress shown. We phoned the airport and were assured that clearance was given and the parcel would be with us on Monday.
Saturday 23rd we were still relaxing. Howard baked a cake, half size as we had only one egg. Sunday Mervyn went into Mexico City with Manfred and Lotti when Manfred and Lotti returned, without Mervyn they invited Howard across for tea. Monday, the parts arrived. Tuesday, and Wednesday we waited for the parts to be fitted. Thursday the parts were fitted at last, we were ready by 1700 and set off to have the tracking adjusted. Friday we made an early start to visit Tula ruins and with a decision to make up for lost time we continued to Queretaro to camp at the Hotel Flamingo, where we arrived by 1700. As we were late settling in we had dinner in the hotel, it was very good.
