APRIL 09

USA-Front Royal

Wednesday 1st was a rest day but we still had to drive into Front Royal to print off a form from an e-mail to send to our shipping agent.  On our return there was the washing to be done.  A rest day?  Thursday was another “rest day”.  We set off into town back to the computer shop to print off two maps for use in Baltimore and copies of the delivery forms for the caravan.  We had lunch in a Mexican restaurant, it was excellent.  We returned to book into the camp for yet another night.  Another 24hrs of internet was paid for ($5) and the air burned hot to book our flight back to the UK and a hotel between the delivery of the van and the flight out on the next day.  We were due to arrive at Heathrow at 0700 after an overnight flight.  Friday today we went back to the computer shop to print our e-tickets for the airlImage0707ine and our hotel reservation, the people in the shop were very helpful and interested in our world tour.  Then we set off to a new camp on Cedar Creek where a civil war battle was fought.

Saturday 4th resting? Mervyn started to sort out and throw out unwanted items.  It was a fine sunny day for a change.  Sunday we moved camp to be nearer Baltimore.  The drive in fine sunny weather took most of the morning.  We both packed in the afternoon.  Monday the packing continued.  It rained to help matters.  Tuesday we made an early start only to join a stationary traffic queue as we left the camp. Ten min later the queue moved off quite quickly and we soon arrived in the vicinity of our destination.  An hour and a half later after four different sets of directions, we phoned them and with their directions finally arrived at the warehouse.  Packing the caravan’s contents took two hours, and then we set off to the agents for shipping the van, with explicit directions on the route.  The road names are sometimes so small that you have to stop to find and read them.  Another phone call for more directions and then we finally arrived at the agents.  Only one person was allowed to take the vehicle into the docks, so Mervyn drove the van while Howard stopped in the agent’s office.  When Mervyn returned, Mike the shipper took both of us to a taxi rank for our journey to Dulles International Airport.  A long drive cost $260-.  We settled in at our hotel and then went to the hotel next door for dinner.  What a day!!!  Wednesday a lazy morning before we checked out at 1200, the hotel staff stored our luggage and we went next door for lunch, the best pizza Howard has ever had.  We returned to our hotel to wait for the hotel bus to take us to the airport.  We had yet more waiting at the airport until we finally took off at 1900 (midnight BST) for Heathrow.  Thursday we arrived at Heathrow early in the morning.
